WA forcibly acquires Aboriginal land for Woodside’s LNG hub Print E-mail

WA Premier Colin Barnett has decided to forcibly acquire land at James Price Point, 60 km north of Broome to house the Woodside Petroleum (ASX: WPL) – Browse joint venture liquefied natural gas hub, a move which the Australian Conservation Foundation undermines public confidence in decision-making around areas of great natural and cultural value.

Labor, Coalition vie for low-carbon credibility Print E-mail

Both Labor and the Coalition squared up to each other on energy efficiency and policies to reduce Australia’s carbon emissions ahead of the 21 August election. Through its Low Carbon Communities program Labor said it would support local councils and communities to take action on climate change and transition to a greener future. The Coalition meanwhile announced $10 million for green skills for farmers and a program to provide solar panels for sports clubs, scouts and other not-for-profit organisations.

Australia’s electricity generators emitted less greenhouse gases in 2009 compared with a year earlier despite a continued reliance on coal-fired power stations and an increase in the use of some of the largest and most greenhouse intensive coal-fired stations in the country, the Climate Group said.

Timber company Gunns Ltd (ASX: GNS) is hoping to become “a leader in sustainable forest and environmental management”, according to its rebranded website, having sold Tasmamian native forests to a local conservationist and philanthropist and embarked on the road to full Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.
