Rory Sullivan, head of responsible investment at Insight Investment, says the integration of ESG issues into investment decision-making by pension fund trustees has been superficial. “We are broadly where we were a year ago, which is some of the easy ‘tick-box’ stuff in place, but with deeper engagement with responsible investment really not starting to happen. Progress towards full integration [of ESG] probably hasn’t stalled, but it isn’t moving particularly fast.” Corporate governance and sustainability issues need to be integrated in a much more thoughtful way since many of the risks companies have to deal with come out of the ESG sphere.
